Computers and Writing Online 2001 was the companion conference to Computers and Writing 2001, to be held May 17-20 2001 at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The theme of both conferences is "A Cyber Odyssey," and, like the onsite conference, C&W Online will explore the developing uses of technology in writing classrooms at all levels.

This year, C&W Online will collaborate with the onsite conference to include online segments of the Graduate Research Network, and several of the conference strands, as well as events unique to the online conference, such as MOOshop, the workshop for teachers who want to learn about teaching in a MOO, and demonstrations and explorations of various online tools.

Some discussions will be asynchronous, taking place on our email forum. Other events will be real time, taking place on the MOO Connections. We'll provide many opportunities for those who aren't already familiar with MOOs to get help with Connections, so don't worry if you don't even know what a MOO is--we want you to attend, and we'll help you get there!

The special mission of the C&W Online conference is to address several needs of the computers and writing community and its annual Computers and Writing conference:

  • The online conference provides a forum for events that are more effectively or more practically presented online. For example, discussions of online teaching environments are especially compelling when the attendees participate in the environment, and teachers can easily involve their students in online presentations, since they do not have to travel.

  • The online conference provides an opportunity for computers and writing community outreach, allowing those wondering what the community has to offer to join important events by investing only time.

  • The online conference provides an opportunity for those who cannot travel to the face to face conference to attend conference events and present their work in an alternate forum.

  • The online conference provides a forum in which the entire community (regardless of their ability to travel) can engage issues related to the conference theme at greater length than the three-day onsite conference allows.

Please join us for as much of Computers and Writing Online 2001 as you can--we look forward to seeing you there!
