NWE: Help: Email: Forwarding
Students and instructors can forward email from or to the NWE. This is an easy way to be able to read mail from another email address. You can even set up your mail so a copy of each message is available from both the NWE and a remote adddress! Here's how:
From the NWE to another server
Setting up, changing, or removing forwarding
From a Rolfs terminal, click on the NWE menu and select Account management, then Change mail forward. Alternately, you may type 'chforward' at an Xterm shell. Either way, a small forwarding program will help you set up, change, or remove email forwarding.
If you want to get a copy of the mail at both the NWE and your external address, just answer "Yes" when the mail forwarding program asks, "Do you wish to keep a copy locally (y/n)? If you answer "no" to this option when forwarding your mail, you won't be able to read mail with your NWE account -- it will only be available from your other account.
(For nerds only: this program just makes a text file called .forward in your home directory and puts the proper email address there. If you want to use your favorite editor to make a .forward file, go ahead.)
From other servers to the NWE
We don't recommend that students forward mail to their NWE accounts. If you forward mail to the NWE from other servers, you'll need to unforward it at the end of the semester or your mail will be lost! Hence, this information is provided for instructors (mostly).
To forward your mail from other servers to your NWE account you need to tell the other servers to do the forwarding. In most cases you can just make a small text file called ".forward" in your home directory on the other server and that will get it done. However, other ways of doing it exist (for example, AOL uses a different method). Contact the system administrators of the other servers you use for more information.
To forward Gatorlink (ufl.edu) email, go to the Gatorlink page (http://gatorlink.ufl.edu) and choose "Modify." Log in with your Gatorlink user name and password. You can then change your email forwarding.
AOL Issue
AOL frequently blocks all mail from UF as spam, so we do NOT recommend that you use AOL mail to access your campus email or for any UF related activities. This means that AOL is NOT reliable for UF business use, for class list-serves, to forward UF mail to, or for any other UF-related email.
Please also note that Hotmail and other email providers often put email from list-serves and forwarded email into Junk mail boxes. Please make sure that your forwarded UF accounts and for your class list-serves are listed as 'approved' senders to make sure that you get email from them.
For ease, we suggest that you forward your [NWE or @dept] email to your Gatorlink address (@ufl.edu) and then using Gatorlink webmail (https://webmail.ufl.edu/).
