In most email programs, there are several ways to send mail messages. Here are the functions you should be looking for, and their purpose:

Send an email message to someone. "Compose" a new email message by using the Compose or New mail function.
Send an answer to someone who has sent you a mail message. This is called a "Reply." Use the Reply function. Your reply will be automatically addressed to the person who sent the message. The subject will also be modified to say "Re:" or "Reply:" as needed.
Send an answer to someone who has sent a message to more than one person, and send a copy to other recipients as well. Use the Reply All function. Suppose your instructor sends you and all the members of your class a message. If you use Reply, your reply will go only to the instructor only. If you use Reply All, your reply will go to the instructor as well as all the members of your class.
Send along a message you received to someone else. Use the Forward function. Like replies, the subject will be modified. A "forwarded message" separator is often added to the message.

Always check the headers when sending email to make sure you are doing what you want to -- composing a new message, replying to one or more people, or forwarding a message. Once it's sent, you can't "Undo" the message!
