NWE Help: Email: Remote: Restrictions

NWE Home :: Help :: Email :: Remote

Anti-spam measures have forced us to restrict access to our electronic mail server mailhost.nwe.ufl.edu in several ways. These restrictions only affect sending mail, not reading it.

  1. Access is restricted. You must have an NWE account to send mail using our email server.

  2. Relaying is denied. You cannot send mail to a non-NWE email address unless you are logged in to the NWE with ssh or from an NWE terminal. From remote locations, you'll need to configure your SMTP server according to your ISP's directions.

  3. Batch mailing is prohibited. Any IP address which attempts to send a large quantity of mail using our mail server will be blocked.

Generally, these restrictions are no big deal -- you simply need to use the SMTP (sending mail) host value provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for sending mail. If you do that, you'll be able to send mail to anyone at the NWE (or any other domain, for that matter) with no problems.

We use the latest version of the GPL-licensed Sendmail to reduce spam and enhance security.
