NWE Home :: Help :: Graphics :: Gimp

Gimp allows you to use many different colors when creating images. The primary color display is located at the bottom of the main Gimp tool palette (as shown). The color in the upper left (purple in our example) is the current foreground color; the color to the right is the background color. The foreground color is the primary color produced by the paint tools.

To switch the colors in the palette, you can use the color selection dialogue (shown below). To see the color selection dialog, click on the color you want to change. The dialog will open.

Actually switching colors is quite easy. You can:

  1. Click on the color you like (using the vertical color bar and the color gradient box)
  2. Choose the RGB combination you like (using the slider bars on the right)
  3. Type in the 6-character hexidecimal code for the color you want (using the text box at the bottom)
  4. Use one of the three other color-selection methods noted by the tabs at the top
Once you select the color you want, it will appear in the box on the main tool palette. Feel free to close the color selection window, or leave it open if you like.
