You can apply special effects to your type by selecting the area and then applying the desired effect.
For example, if you want your image to shrink in from the sides, choose F/X > Implode. If you want a wavy look to your image, choose F/X > Wave. F/X > Oil Painting will give your image an oil painting look, etc.
Each effect opens a dialogue box and asks you for dimensions that activate the effect. Experiment with the dimensions to get the desired effect.

If you want to apply the changes to text, you first need to select the text you wish to alter.
To select the text, select Image Edit > Region of Interest, then use your mouse to drag a selection marquee around the area you want to work with. Once the selection is made you can apply the effects by choosing "OK" in the dialogue box that opens. When you are finished, choose "Dismiss" to return to the main toolbar.
