To create a new image in ImageMagick:
Choose File > New. A dialog box appears asking you to "Enter image geometry."

Type in the dimensions (in pixels) of the new image. The first dimension is the width; the second is the height. A good idea might be to start with a fairly large dimension like 500 x 500. This will give you a lot of space to experiment, and you can crop the image or cut and paste a portion of it into a new file later. Uncheck the gradient option unless you want your initial canvas to appear as a range of colors. Click the New button. A new dialog box appears asking you to select a color. You might want to choose white or a color that matches the background of the web page that will house the image you are creating. A blank canvas opens and you are ready to start work.
