NWE Help: Instructors: Environment: Reboot Terminals

NWE Home :: Help :: Instruct :: Environment

Occasionally a terminal in one of the classrooms will freeze. When this occurs there's a good chance you can solve the problem by rebooting.

When the NWE labs opened in Fall 1994, all terminals could be rebooted by simultaneously pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. That method doesn't work on many of the newer first-floor terminals, however. To reboot most of the terminals now installed in Rolfs 105 and 114, you should press the Pause key on the top row of your keyboard. A dialog box called "NCD User Services: Console" will appear. From the menu at the top select Login > Logout. Another dialog will appear asking whether you want to log out; select "yes."

The linux terminals installed in Rolfs 314 and 315 (circa August 2000) require the CTRL+ALT+DEL procedure.

The SunRay terminals in Rolfs 115 cannot be reset except by NWE staff, due to the fact that everything they do is on the server.

If you have neither the time nor the inclination to keep track of what terminals are installed in which rooms, don't worry. Luckily, you don't have to be certain of the type of terminal you're using to attempt a reboot: You can't harm the terminal by trying the wrong reboot method. If the first method you try doesn't work, just use the other.

Every now and then, the reboot routine won't solve your problem. If that happens, you can restart the terminal manually by turning off the power on the unit beneath the desk, waiting a few seconds, then turning the power back on. Please discourage your students from turning off any equipment in the classrooms. If you don't want to crawl under a desk yourself, ask a member of the NWE staff to help you.

Please note: pressing the "off" button on the monitor doesn't solve anything, so don't bother.
