NWE Help: Instruct: Environment: Upgrade

NWE Home :: Help :: Instruct :: Environment

In the Spring of 2005, the NWE underwent some minor upgrades.

Mozilla

Mozilla was upgraded to version 1.7.3, so sites and browsing work more reliably.

EXMH to Mozilla Mail

Mozilla Mail is now the default mail application for all NWE users. Exmh can still be accessed by typing

exmh &

In a shell, but Mozilla Mail is now the official program for NWE instructors and students.

In the Fall of 2003, the NWE underwent some minor upgrades.

Mozilla

The minor upgrades include switching to Mozilla from Netscape 4.7. With this change, CLAS has also implemented IMAP for secure email. Mozilla supports IMAP, so now NWE and CLAS users can use Mozilla mail and have all of their mail located on the same secure system area.

Electronic Bulletin Boards

The upgrades also include the addition of bulletin boards for classes. These bulletin boards provide yet another venue for class discussion and are available for all classes in the NWE and in CLAS.

In the Fall of 2001, the NWE underwent a major upgrade. The features listed below are changes that occurred due to that upgrade. At this time, no other major upgrades are scheduled for the Networked Writing Environment.

Strange login screens
A fix is documented here.

Toolbar and Services menu
The biggest change in user interface is that toolbar and services menu have been replaced by task bar and NWE menu, similar to the task bar and Start menu in Microsoft Windows. We think this interface will prove more accessible to students familiar with Windows.

StarOffice replaced Wordperfect
WordPerfect has been replaced by StarOffice, an application suite which includes a word processor, presentation software, a spreadsheet, HTML editing, and even graphics manipulation programs. StarOffice may take a bit longer to load than WordPerfect but it should be much more stable and have fewer printing problems than WordPerfect. StarOffice can also read Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files.

public_html instead of web directory
All users now use a "public_html" directory for Web files, not a "web" directory.

Netscape Communicator 4.7
Netscape Navigator 4.6 has been replaced by Netscape Communicator 4.7. Please do NOT use Netscape Mail to read your mail, or suggest that your students do so; we do not support this mail client -- it is still unreliable. You may configure Netscape Mail to send mail, but please do not read mail with it.

Netscape 3 has been removed from the system.

Class email list archives
The archives for class email lists have moved to a new directory. They are now at http://www.clas.ufl.edu/archives/
