NWE Help: Instruct: Semester End

NWE Home :: Help :: Instruct

Here are most of the things we think you should know as you finish a semester teaching in the Networked Writing Environment.

What happens to accounts

At the end of the semester, all student accounts are deleted from the NWE system. There are no exceptions to this rule. For more information, see our account FAQ for documentation of this rule.

Instructors use their own department accounts. They are given NWE access during the semester that they are teaching. See below for more information. The day after grades are due, that access is removed.

Some Graduate Students take courses in the NWE. When they do, they are given NWE student accounts for that semester. At the end of the semester, those accounts are erased just like normal student accounts. If they want to save the information from those accounts, they should refer to our help page about doing so.

In the case of an incomplete

If you are granting an incomplete to one of your students, you should contact the NWE help staff with the following information:

  1. instructor's real name
  2. student's real name
  3. student's username
  4. section number
NOTE: DO NOT send passwords through email.

Helping students save their work

During the semester, some students may have created work in the NWE that they want to save. Depending on what kind of work it is, you can help them use different methods to save their work.

Web pages
Students wishing to save their web work will need to export it to another server. If they have their own ISP, they should inquire there about having their web pages hosted there. If they have a Gatorlink account, they may choose to have their pages hosted at plaza.ufl.edu. The Gatorlink information page tells more about how to acquire this space.

Once the student has a place to put their web pages, they need to use FTP to transfer the files. Have them refer to our FTP help pages for more details about FTP.

Other documents
To transfer other documents from the NWE, students need merely log in on another system and use FTP to transfer their files out. Have them refer to our FTP help pages for more details about FTP.

MOO work
Since MOO work can only be saved in the MOO, your student can not save her work by herself. You should talk to the student about what they want to save -- do they want to show the project off to others? Are they really "in to" the MOO and plan to continue working in MOOville? Once you have clarified what they want to do, have them email MOO help with a request for services. In general, active and interested students will be able to keep their moo accounts if they request to do so.

Archiving student work

Many instructors like to save student work to use as examples. Depending on the work you would like to save, we recommend different procedures.

Web work
The most common type of document instructors like to save for their students are web documents. The NWE has a program to help you do just this, called copy-www. We have a copy-www help page that explains how the program works.

Email archives
Many TAs use their email lists as pedagogical tools. If you do so, and want to save the email list, you should make a copy of your email list. The NWE has a program to help you do just this, called listarchive. We have a listarchive help page that explains how the program works. See our web page about tar archives for more information.

MOO work
Some TAs who use MOO have their students dig spaces and build objects. Sometimes those TAs choose to save examples of their student work. Since the MOO has a limited amount of space, we can only save a few student projects each semester, but we are happy to do so. If you have some student work you want to save, email MOO help with your request.

Bulletin Boards
Many TAs use their bulletin boards as pedagogical tools. If you do so, and want to save the bulletin board, you should request that NWE help make a tar archive of your bulletin board. See our web page about tar archives for more information.

NWE instructor access

The Networked Writing Environment is a very efficient space. It serves hundreds of students each semester using a very limited set of resources. One of the ways we are able to do so is by keeping the system access limited to those who are using the system. Consequently, if you are not teaching in the NWE, you will not be able to use the system. Your account with CLASnet will still exist, and you will still have access to your files (thorough FTP) and your email, but you will need to manage those files from another system.

The IMaGE lab is a resource you can use to develop your web documents and your web graphics for your teaching. Feel free to stop by and learn more.
