NWE Help: Intro: Account: Passwords
NWE Home :: Help :: Intro :: Account
Your password is your "key" to your account. It must not be shared with others. Work done on your account will be assumed to have been produced by you. Please notify your instructor if you believe your account has been used by others.
NWE passwords are different than Gatorlink, Grove, or NERDC passwords.
Changing your NWE password
You can change a password selecting the "Change password" program in the "Account Management" sub-menu, or by using the passwd command at a shell. However, there's really no need for NWE students to do this. Our passwords are designed to be secure, and your time in the NWE is short. If you do change your password, don't make it match other passwords you use -- because if one account is cracked, then they can all be.
If you do change your password, make sure the CAPS LOCK key isn't pressed when you do so -- and don't use the number keypad to enter a password; it won't work after it's updated!
If you forget your password...
Are you sure you have forgotten it? If you're trying to log in from a Rolfs terminal, click the "Start Over" button on the login screen and try again. Also, make sure the caps lock key isn't pressed -- passwords are case sensitive.
Your instructor should have a copy of your password. Ask for it. If your instructor does not have your password, she can mail us and we'll make a new one. Then your instructor can come by Rolfs 111 during normal business hours and get the new password, or you can do the same (if you bring a picture ID).
We cannot "look up" passwords. We can only make new ones.
We will NOT email you or your instructor a new password. Email is not secure. There are no exceptions to this policy.
