All students who take courses offered in the Networked Writing Environment (NWE) receive a computer account and a password. The computer account is for personal class-related use only.
An NWE account is quite powerful -- it enables direct, high-speed access to the Internet, electronic mail, USENET network news, direct access to course-related information and other online information, and software which helps to complete class projects (hypertexts, papers, and the like).
The following restrictions apply to all NWE account holders:
- No NWE account shall be used in a manner harmful to others.
- The CLASNet Privacy Policy applies to all NWE accounts.
- All University of Florida rules and regulations regarding student computer use apply to use of the NWE system. This includes the Student Conduct Code and the UF Acceptable Use Policy.
- Food and drink are not permitted in NWE classrooms.
- Attempts to gain unauthorized access to NWE systems are prohibited by the Florida Computer Crimes Act.
- Accounts and/or passwords may NOT be shared. Passwords must NEVER be emailed to anyone for any reason. Users may be held responsible for illegal activities which occur due to unauthorized account access.
- Any user who suspects that his or her account has been used by another person must notify an NWE instructor and/or the NWE staff immediately.
- Users must log out after completing their session. Any user who repeatedly fails to log out will have their account disabled after the third occurrence.
- Any account not used for longer than four months will be disabled. Any account disabled for a year will be deleted.
- No user may install or compile software of any kind on the NWE system without written permission from an NWE system administrator. Copyrighted software programs or documentation may not be stored on the NWE system.
- Copyrighted digital texts, such as hypertexts, images, PDF, MP3, MPG, or AVI representations of photos, films, music, and other works, may be stored on the NWE system only if use of the text meets the criteria of the Fair Use doctrine of the US Copyright Code. The NWE follows a strict interpretation of academic fair use, as supported by College and University policies.
- The NWE requires that standard academic citation practices be followed for all copyrighted material stored on NWE servers. This includes works used under the Fair Use doctrine. To meet the requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA) NWE system administrators may disable without prior notice any pages or files in violation of this policy.
- All questions about these policies should be referred to the NWE staff or an NWE instructor.
If you have questions about these policies please contact the NWE staff for clarification.
