NWE Help: Problems: General
Here is a list of problems that come up frequently and ways that you can solve them. Many of these documents simply link to other help locations. If you don't see an answer to your question here, try our suggestions for getting more help.
General questions
- Where can I get an intro to the NWE?
- We have lots of documentation on that right here.
- Why can't I log in?
- There are several possiblities. First, if you're logging in from Rolfs, try resetting the login screen. Second, make sure caps lock isn't pressed. Third, perhaps you've forgotten your password -- here's what to do then. Finally, there may be a problem with our system. If you think that's the case report it to us.
- How do I change my password?
- Select Change password from the NWE menu, and follow the prompts. We have some help on passwords.
Working in Rolfs Hall
- When are the labs open?
- Daily. Rolfs 114 has many open hours. Around holidays and the end of the semester, the NWE often has shortened office hours. Check the NWE homepage for updates.
- What happens if my terminal freezes, or there is some other problem with an NWE terminal or computer?
- Tell your instructor or a lab assistant. If you can't speak with one of those folks, contact the help staff.
- How can I print a file or document?
- Printing varies by application. See our printing summary page.
- I have a floppy disk. Where can I use it?
- Not in the NWE. You can move files on floppy to your NWE account using ftp (file transfer protocol) in a CIRCA lab.
- What do I do if the printer jams?
- Report it. Don't try to fix it. Ever. Here's why.
- Can I bring in my laptop to do a presentation?
- Yes, with your instructor's permission. Ask your instructor to email the NWE Help staff at least 2 business days before your presentation for help setting up. They will help connect your laptop to the projector and disconnect it when you are done. Also, make sure you have all the information you need for your presentation on your computer--we cannot give you access to the internet for it.
Other questions
- What kind of computer should I buy?
- That depends upon your upper-division college and major. See the CIRCA computer requirements page for more information.
