NWE Help: Remote: FTP: Notes

NWE Home :: Help :: Remote :: FTP

You will notice your ftp client allows you to select "Binary," "ASCII," or "Auto" as its file transfer methods. If you didn't read our help page on that subject, please do so now. Quick rule: when in doubt, use binary.

To move between directories in your FTP client, double-click on a directory name. To go up a directory, double-click on ".." (the dot-dot).

An ftp client has many uses. If you are an instructor in the NWE, you can develop assignments on your home computer, connect to the network and transfer them to your "web" directory so that they can be accessed by your students. This allows you to work at home and minimize the dial-up time you will need to create HTML documents.

Similarly, if you are a student and your instructor has given you an assignment that requires web page creation, you can use your home system to create the files and then transfer them to your account without having to go to Rolfs Hall labs.

Ftp clients have many more features than are documented here. The help files provided with the program are detailed -- check them out. Remember that ftp clients can be used to connect to any FTP remote site, not just the NWE.

The ws_ftp program provided on the CIRCA software CD is what the documentation refers to as the "limited" or "LE" version. Many of the features that are detailed within the program's internal documentation are for the professional version only. None of these features are necessary to transfer files between your computer and the NWE system. However, if you desire technical support from Ipswitch, the people who make ws_ftp, you'll need to buy the professional version.
