Tera Term SSH allows you to connect to the NWE computers using a shell (command-line) interface. If you've never used a command-line before, try it in the labs before worrying about SSH. Select "Local XTerm shell" from the NWE menu to see what you'll be dealing with.
You should also check out our shell documentation to see what you can do with a shell.
A copy of Tera Term Pro is included on the UF Computing CD, which you can purchase from the bookstore at the HUB for $3 plus tax. You also can download the program and set it up yourself, but this option is more complicated.

If you have the UF Computing CD, insert it in your CD-ROM drive. If the installation program doesn't start automatically, you will have to run the program manually (refer to the User's Guide for your computer operating system for specific instructions). The first thing you will see after launching the installation is the main menu for the UF Computing CD. To install Tera Term, you will need to select the "Software" option, then the "Other Internet Programs" option. Click the "Tera Term SSH" tab to bring information on the program to the foreground.
You will notice that the installation dialog box on the right contains two "install" buttons. Tera Term must be installed in two steps. Select the top button first, follow the prompts to install the first part, then return to the menu and install the second part. Don't forget to install the second part! Tera Term's SSH function won't work without it.
Once you have installed both parts of the program, your Tera Term program folder should include icons for both Tera Term Pro and Ttssh. Use the second one to access the NWE from home.
