NWE Help: StarOffice: Basics

NWE Home :: Help :: StarOffice

StarOffice is a full office suite, complete with slide show, spreadsheet, and word processing applications. The NWE generally uses the word processing application, but the other options are available and work well.

Word Processing

By default, when you open StarOffice a blank word processing page is loaded. StarOffice's word processing works like most general word processing programs (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect) with standard icons to make the text align in one direction, buttons to make text bold or italicized, and so forth. If you have questions on these parts of the StarOffice installation, please see the StarOffice's excellent internal help or ask your instructor.

Word Count and Footnotes

While the standard set up is consistent with other programs, some of the other options are accessed a bit differently. To do a word count, click on File -- Properties. A new dialog box will open, here you should click on the Statistics tab for the word count. To insert a footnote, click on Insert -- Footnote. To change the appearance of your footnotes, click on Format -- Page -- Footnote.

Slide Show

To make a slide show presentation with StarOffice, click on File -- New -- Presentation as shown with the options in the screenshot below. Once you do this, a new window will pop open and it will ask you to fill in several options for how your presentation will be structured. Once you answer these and hit create, you will have the basic slide format and you can edit and develop the slides.

Spreadsheets

To open a new spreadsheet, click on File -- New -- Presentation, like the options in the screenshot above.
