NWE Help: XWindows: Login

NWE Home :: Help :: XWindows

During your second or third class of the semester, your instructor will provide you with a small card with your userid (user identification) and a password. Please put this card in a safe place, such as your wallet, after committing the password and username to memory.

To log into the system for the first time, please follow the steps below. These steps assume you are seated at a computer in Rolfs Hall.

  1. Use the mouse to press the "Start Over" button (at the bottom of the login window). This will insure that the login fields are blank and the terminal ready to use.

  2. After the screen refreshes, click in the large outlined box under the text "Please Enter your Username."

  3. Type your NWE userid in the box, then press Enter or click the box marked "OK".

  4. The login box will change to include the NWE logo and a second dialog box, click in the large outlined box under the text "Please Enter your Password."

  5. Type your NWE password in the box, then press Enter or click the box marked "OK". (Your password will not be displayed as you type.)

If you entered your userid and/or password correctly, the X windows desktop will come up and the terminal will be ready to use. Otherwise, you will receive an error message and be returned to the login screen for another try.

If you can't log in:

  • Press the START OVER button and try again.
  • Type your password more s l o w l y.
  • Make sure the CAPS LOCK key is not pressed -- passwords are case sensitive.
  • Try a different terminal.

If your desktop does not match the desktop pictured on our desktop page, you probably stumbled into a SOLARIS desktop. This problem is easy to fix. See our fixing your desktop page.

If that still doesn't help, see your instructor or a lab assistant. If you were able to log in, proceed to the next page.
