i think this message reveals the distinction i have been meaning to
emphasize: the distinction between dissertations made -electronically
available- and those written and intended to be read -as hypertext-.  
it's no small distinction, and like i have mentioned earlier, the current
debates/discussions that i am hearing about have to do with electronic
access and distribution of linear texts.
