NWE: Emergency Procedures

Please follow these procedures in the event of an emergency. We hope this information is useful but never used.

Instructors: during any emergencies you should attempt to contact an NWE or CLASnet staff member. Staff are usually in Rolfs 111 or Rolfs 100. There are telephones in these rooms as well.

Serious emergency
(fire, severe injury, natural disaster)

1. Dial 911 to report the problem. From a PBX phone, press OUTDIAL first to get an outside line, then dial '9911'. From the cordless phone, dial '919911'.
If you are reporting an injury, get the age, gender, and physical characteristics of the person injured, if you can, before making the call. Give authorities the room number and as much information as you can. Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you otherwise.
2. After calling 911 for dispatch of emergency response (paramedics, fire department, etc.), contact University Police (2-1111). (UPD simply calls 911 when a serious emergency is reported to them.)

Less serious emergency
(non-life-threatening injury, elevator problems, power failure, or flooding)

Contact University Police (2-1111) and report the problem. Give authorities the room number and as much information as you can. Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you otherwise. If UPD asks for a phone number, it is 2-6294.

Information relevant to all emergencies

  • Do not stay in the building -- even to notify others in the building of an emergency -- if it would endanger your personal safety. Get out immediately and call 911 from a different phone. There are pay phones outside the Hub by the ATM.

  • PBX telephones can be found in Rolfs 113 and Rolfs 111. Press OUTDIAL and dial 9 to get an outside line if needed.

  • Fire alarm pull boxes are located at both ends of every hallway in Rolfs Hall. The fire panel for Rolfs Hall is in Room 104.

  • In the event of a fire, sustained power outage, or other serious emergency, contact CLASnet operations manager Dallas Antley after contacting the appropriate authorities and after the emergency is under control. After-hours contact information.

Other relevant information

Animals
Call University Pest Control (2-2365), nights and weekends. Report exact location.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE THE ANIMAL.

Bomb threats
Obtain from the caller as much information as possible about the threat. Note the time and date, the exact wording, the accent of the caller, background noises, location of the bomb and time of detonation. Attempt to determine the sex and age of the caller.
If expected detonation is imminent, pull the nearest fire alarm to evacuate the building. Then:
    1. Call University Police Department (2-1111)
    2. The decision to reoccupy the building will be made by UPD.

Flood, leak, or power outage (non-severe)
Call Physical Plant Work Management (2-1121) and report the problem. If power is out longer than 15 mins call UPD (2-1111) for help evacuating the building.
