NWE Hardware

We have a Unix-based system of servers, workstations and xterminals in five classrooms and offices. Our system is used by as many as 1,800 students and 100 instructors every semester. The servers listed here run Sun's Solaris operating system version 8.

Our central application servers stoker, poe, shelley, verne and wells provide Xwindows to the five classrooms in Rolfs Hall as well as English Department offices in Turlington Hall. Rolfs 105 and 114 use NCD Explora 450s. Rolfs 314 and 315 contain Celeron-based Linux terminals. Both provide 16 bit color at 1024 x 768 resolution. Rolfs 115 are SunRay 1 terminals, which provide 16 bit color at 1024 x 768 resolution. Over the long term we plan to upgrade all our classrooms to 16 or 24 bit video systems.

Server and network hardware is located in Rolfs 113 and 208.

Network information

We get fibre from CLASnet into our Cisco 3500XL switch. It provides 100-megabit Ethernet to the tserver and the other network devices. The xterms in each classroom are connected to Allied Telesyn unmanaged 10/100 switches.

Server information

See Allan's server page for information about servers in the machine room in Rolfs 208.
