Suggestions for the new system

Here is a list of suggestions and problems noted regarding the NWE system. Problems which have been resolved are noted with blue shading. Please feel free to make more suggestions for changes by sending mail to help@nwe.ufl.edu.

Color coding:
White means "unresolved" Yeller means "oh well, we can't fix it" Blue means "fixed"

8/14 Was not fixed by upgrade to more recent version.

8/17 Low priority -- the file manager uses the phrase "put in trash" instead of the term "delete." I worry that students will think that this trash works like the one on their PC at home (they'll think files are easily recovered). Is there any way we can change this phrasing? Brendan
8/13 The File manager crashes when drag-and-drop is used to move files. A core-dump in ~briley may have some good info about undefined environment variables in it. Brendan
8/13 The /etc/motd is not displayed on start-up. For CYA, we need the students to see that we're logging their activities, that only authorized use is allowed, etc. One way to do that is to add the following to the NWE startup script:

/usr/dt/bin/dthello -file /etc/issue -file /etc/motd &

8/8 tkMOO is sucking down some serious CPU-age. Like, half of whatever is available. If Brendan and Bradley each run tkMOO at the same time, the load average is 3+ and the programs are noticeably slow. Bradley 8/11 Might be fixed by upgrade to more recent version.
8/14 another bug in the dt file manager. When I double-click star writer files to open them, the file manager opens them as gobbledegook in the "PC File Viewer" Brendan We are not going to support double-click openings from the file manager.
8/6 HTML editor: When the HTML editor asWe appears in the task bar it does not have an icon, and its name is "no name 1". The name changes when the file is saved (to the name of the file) but there is still no icon. It would be good to have a setup similar to Netscape (Netscape: ). Bradley 8/8: Sherri added a generic icon to appear where no icon was defined. This is fine for now. Oh Well.
8/8 The task bar icons for changing forward and password do not match the NWE menu icons. Bradley We'll deal with this later. Oh well.
8/8 The menu bar (task bar) does not go all the way across the screen, and the "button" which links to the NWE menu doesn't "click up and down" reliably. Bradley Sherri says that's a bug -- we can't fix this - oh well.
8/6 Default project options need to be set in the HTML editor. I think to do this in NWE we had to customize the default .asWe-prefs that was created when a new account was made. There seems to be little effect from the different options; previously the projectBase was the default directory for all dialog boxes. Now it's only the default for relative URLs. Perhaps projectBase should be ~/web/ ? (This seems to be a difference from the asWe 3, less of a problem than it used to be.) Bradley Fixed.
8/8 gifsicle is not in the default PATH. Where is it? Brendan 8/15 It has been added to /opt/gifsicle_1.25/bin/ ... seems to work fine. Still needs to be added to path though.
8/23 working fine.
8/6 Default printers need to be defined for the HTML editor. Bradley 8/15 this is done and needs testing only.
8/23 done -- works fine now.
8/13 If you're impatient and click the 'logout' button when an application (like netscape) is starting, the dialog box comes up, but is covered by the app's window.

The 'Exit' dialog box should be configured as 'AllwaysOnTop'.

Dallas Fixed by Sherri
8/13 The button bar has no way of indicating that it is in the process of executing the program. (an hourglass or something) Lisa H 8/15: Toolbar deleted
8/3 TOOLBAR: If we're going to have a toolbar, we should have a place to click (like the title bar) that brings it to the foreground without actually pressing any of the buttons. Bradley thinks the toolbar should go away (it's old-fashioned looking). Brendan 8/8 Sherri changed toolbar to come to top on mouseover.
8/14 Sherri changed toolbar again to come to top on right click
8/14 Star Office can not print. Turns out it prints to Dallas' office printer. Bradley and Brendan
8/14 this will be done, just not today or tomorrow.
8/15 Done. Now Rolfs rooms are able to print to printers, and when servers are determined, the default will be set for each room.
8/8 tkMOO-light local echo does not seem to work -- whether it's on or off, the window does not have local echo. Brendan 8/11 Might be fixed by upgrade to more recent version.
8/14 Was fixed by upgrade to more recent version.
8/3 Window management. When you click and drag on the side of the window, the window is only moved. To resize a window, you must click on the corner. I think it is better done from the side as well, especially since the "resize" cursor appears on the side as well.

update: a left click re-size would be optimal.

Brendan 8/8 Sherri added right click re-size feature.
8/10 Done - Sherri changed management to left-click resize. Excellent.
8/3 MOOville: mooville is not included in the "worlds" menu of TK moo lite. (for brendan, anyhow) It looks like the .worlds.tkm file is not working right. Bradley 8/10 Fixed. Yay!
8/8 We know Allan hates it, but the absence of "Close window" from the default windows menu is annoying. It should be restored. Brendan 8/9 Done.
8/8 The default directory for saving (images, files) from Netscape is "/usr/dt/appconfig/netscape/" -- this should be the home directory or the web directory. Brendan Fixed 8/10 Directory is now $home
8/8 The NWE menu "Programs" item is getting cluttered. I think we should split it up into submenus in the NWE menu, using the NWE help as a base. Or we could just split off "Graphics programs" from "Programs." I'm not suggesting hierarchical menus -- those are a pain. Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this menu.
8/8 Dtfile file manager does not have an icon when in the task bar. When it is run, it also takes the name of the current directory. I think it would be better to have an icon and have the title in the task bar be "File Manager". Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this icon.
8/8 Double-clicking on a text file in the file manager brings up the dt text editor. We should add this application to the NWE menu near Pico. Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this icon.
8/8 The dt text editor does not have an icon in the task bar. Its title in the task bar is the name of the file opened. It would be better to have an icon and have the title in the task bar be "Text editor". Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this icon.
8/8 Double-clicking on a Word document in the file manager brings up the PC file viewer. We should add this application to the NWE menu near StarOffice. Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this menu item.
8/8 The PC file viewer does not have an icon in the task bar. Its title in the task bar is the name of the file opened. It would be better to have an icon and have the title in the task bar be "PC file viewer". Bradley 8/8 Sherri added this icon.
8/8 The Gimp needs an icon in the task bar. Bradley 8/8 Sherri added Wilber as an icon.
8/8 The pop-up clock under Utilities does not have a window title bar or resize box. It should have both of these. Bradley 8/8 Sherri added these features.
